Instructions on using the Online PDF version of the Muir Beach Directory

Where do I access the online version of the Muir Beach Directory?

The new location of the directory is the CSD website, at http://www.muirbeachcsd.com/.  Specifically, it is on the Contacts & Links page (http://www.muirbeachcsd.com/links.html#Directory); scroll about halfway down the page past the listings of board members, etc.  The online version of the directory is in the form of a password-protected PDF file, from which you can print your own copy of the directory or search for someone within the file.  Note that this site is accessible from anywhere on the Internet.

In order to access the directory, you must have an Adobe Acrobat reader installed on your computer.  The Adobe reader is available for free download from a variety of websites, and the chances are you already have it, as PDF files are fairly ubiquitous on the internet.   If you click the link directly, your browser will start opening the PDF document immediately (and prompt you for the password, explained below) or you can right-click the link and use the “Save Target As” feature to copy the PDF file to your local computer.  The filename of the document is MuirBeachDirectoryOnline.pdf.

Has the password changed?

The password is the same as it was before.  If you would like access, or forgot the password, please send an email to directory@muirbeachcsd.com and you will be sent the password.

How do I update my listing, or get added to the Directory, or even deleted if I want?

Just send an email to directory@muirbeachcsd.com, or put the corrections in the mailbox for 44 Starbuck, or call Maury Ostroff at 381-9765.

How do I search for someone, or for an address?

To find a person or an address quickly, simply use the “Find” feature under the Edit menu in your browser.  You may hold down the “Ctrl” button and press “F”, or click the “Search” button in the toolbar at the top of the PDF page.  It’s just like searching through any text document.

I can’t find some of my neighbors in the online version of the Directory.  Why?

Some residents prefer not to appear in the Directory at all, while others prefer only to appear in the printed format.  Also, there are some new owners or residents that have not yet given explicit permission who will not be included.

What about the hardcopy Print version?

The most recent version available in Print is still the one from April 2007.  Suzanne Bender-Van Spyk might have some copies left, but there have been numerous changes since then.  Best bet is just to print a local copy yourself of the latest online version.  There are tentative plans to have a new Directory printed in the old, shorter handbook style in early 2008.

Is access limited to Muir Beach residents?

Yes, the password is only given out to Muir Beach residents and owners.  Many residents have expressed concerns over who will have access to their information online.  Please respect their privacy and do not share this Directory or give out the password to anyone outside your own immediate household.

What are the restrictions on the PDF?

You will note that in addition to the directory being password-protected, the ability to “cut-and-paste” has been turned off, nor are you allowed to edit the file.  All of this is to prevent unauthorized distribution of the information in the Directory.  However, it is permissible to print the directory on your own local printer.  Note that password-protecting the PDF file prevents search programs (such as Google) from accessing anyone’s names or phone numbers.

How often is the Online Directory updated?

Whenever we are notified of a change!  This is the beauty of the online version, as changes are reflected within a day.  This also enables quick correction of mistakes, typos, etc.  All that’s involved is that we edit/update the Microsoft Word document that contains the directory, convert it to a PDF, and then upload it to the CSD Web Site.  Takes just a few minutes – no proof copies, no hassling with a Printing company, etc.   You will notice that on the footer of each page is a version number containing the date it was last updated.
